ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਉੜੀ ੩੮-ਸਲੋਕ (ਭਾਗ ੧) | Japji Sahib 38-Shalok(Part 1) - The Mint Where the Mind Is Forged

The closing pauri of Japji Sahib is the whole bani's summary in one image: a goldsmith's workshop. Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen expounds "ਜਤੁ ਪਾਹਾਰਾ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੁ" line by line, showing that every pauri before it was asking one question — how is the mind to be shaped? — and this one answers it with a trade. Self-restraint is the workshop, patience the goldsmith, understanding the anvil, knowledge the hammer, the fear of the Divine the bellows, disciplined effort the fire, and love the crucible in which the nectar is poured and cast. He reads each tool against lived experience. Jat, he insists, is not the renunciate's celibacy that the world admires — the path of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the householder's path, because what is renounced can always be dangled back to corrupt the renouncer. Jat is the discipline of the five senses: seeing only what builds a life, touching only what does not defile, and speaking only where speech prevents a wrong. Patience he sets against haste, quoting Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji that hurry is the devil's work, and the line from Asa Ki Vaar about a foot that moves one step while the eye watches a hundred ahead. On ਭਉ ਖਲਾ he draws a distinction he returns to throughout: the fear of the world is filth, but the fear of the Divine is spotless and cleanses the heart — "ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ." Where that fear lives, no police, no cannon and no army are needed, because such a person will not seize another's right. The fire is tap — rising at Amrit Vela, the jaap, seva, nitnem, daan — and the crucible is bhau, love, without which none of the rest reaches God. Fear becomes love, and where there is love, the Divine is present. He closes on Japji Sahib itself: the first utterance revealed to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji after the three days at the Vein, the ladder by which one climbs to ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ, and the mahima recorded of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji for the one who keeps it by heart. But the forging is not finished by effort alone — ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰ: only those upon whom His glance of grace falls do this work at all.
