Here is a short chase of the CSX Y121 Altenheim Job along the namesake Altenheim Subdivision, with CSX 6588, an EMD GP40-3 as solo power.
We begin our chase at the Austin Blvd overpass in Oak Park. The Altenheim Sub parallels both the CTA Blue Line's Forest Park Branch and the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway, and is a seldom-used branch that sees the local only twice a week. CSX owns the trackage up until Madison St in River Forest, and CN takes ownership as the Waukesha Sub northward; however no through trains utilize the line. The local appears in the distance, shoving westbound from the CSX 48th Street Yard in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago.
Following the Y121 west, we observe the switching action at the Ferrara Pan Candy Company plant, located between Harlem Ave and Circle Ave in Forest Park. The train makes several back-and-forth moves as it sorts its pulls and spots, before ultimately fishing out one empty hopper bound for the BRC Clearing Yard. Relocating east back to Austin Blvd, we catch the train one more time as the single engine pulls the one car longhood forward. The friendly engineer challenges passing CTA trains to a horn battle as they pass.
With this right-of-way being eyed as potential territory for the proposed Downtown to Airport "O'Hare Flyer" high speed rail project, the future of the Altenheim Sub's freight traffic is now uncertain. Thanks for watching!
