A newly restored presentation of Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98, performed by Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic in 1943. This restoration was undertaken following a subscriber request. The surviving recording is considerably more constrained than later Furtwängler sources, but beneath those limitations is an intensely dramatic performance. The ArchiveMaestro restoration focuses on recovering orchestral body, transient definition, upper-frequency information, and the sense of the original acoustic space, while avoiding excessive brightening or modern compression. For this edition, the four movements were balanced conservatively to preserve the character of the historical source: I. Allegro non troppo — −17 LUFS II. Andante moderato — −18 LUFS III. Allegro giocoso — −17 LUFS IV. Allegro energico e passionato — −17 LUFS The relatively narrow level arch is deliberate. Increasing the first or final movement further changed the perspective of the recording, pushing the orchestra unnaturally forward. At the chosen levels, the acoustic image remains coherent, and the performance is allowed to generate its intensity internally. The restoration also preserves the characteristic noise structure of the source rather than forcing artificial inter-movement noise normalization. The result is intended to retain the identity of the 1943 recording while recovering as much musical information, spatial depth and orchestral presence as the source permits.
