#amishhome #frugalliving #homesteading Open the cupboard under your sink and look at what is in it. Spray bottles, wipes, paper towels, bags, mop pads. Nearly every one of them is made to be used once and thrown out, so every one of them has to be bought again, and a few dollars here and there becomes a monthly bill you never see. There is a plainer way. In an Amish home like mine, the rule is simple: if you throw it away you must buy it again, and if you wash it and put it back you buy it once. I take you through eleven things we never buy and what takes the place of each, from the kitchen to the laundry line. Today I show you the old way. In this video: • Paper towels, about ten dollars a month, replaced by hand-sized squares cut from an old cotton shirt or worn bath towel, about a dozen from one towel • The kitchen sponge replaced by a plain knit cotton dishcloth, with three going so one is in use, one is drying and one is in the laundry • Paper plates and napkins replaced by washing one plate, one fork and one cup in about two minutes, and by cloth napkins • Plastic wrap and zipper bags replaced by glass jars with lids, a plate over a bowl, and two fingers of room in a jar for the freezer • Coffee pods at about seventy cents each, about twenty dollars a month, replaced by a refill cup of about five dollars • Bottled water replaced by a glass pitcher from your tap kept in the refrigerator • Spray bottles and wipes replaced by half vinegar and half water in a two dollar bottle, and where vinegar must never go • Mop pads, dryer sheets, air fresheners and monthly protection plans, each with its own washable or free answer, and four things that hold for all eleven Chapters: 0:00 The cupboard under your sink 1:35 The two wedding gifts 3:16 1.
