Europe from 2300 BC to 2024, redrawn every year. Every year from 2300 BC to 2024, at 5.06 years per second after a compressed opening (2300 BC..1601 BC at 40.0 years per second). Every border on screen is real mapped territory, not illustration: Cliopatria's (Seshat Global History Databank, CC BY 4.0) polygon for that polity in that year, with gaps filled from OpenHistoricalMap (CC0). 722 states appear; the panel names the largest eight. Notes: White land inside the region is land for which the dataset maps no state in that year - not necessarily empty or unclaimed land. Each state keeps one colour for the whole film; the region window is a framing choice. The source polygons are coarse at the coast, so every territory is fitted to the Natural Earth coastline: fills stop at the shore, and small islands or coastal slivers that no state in the dataset holds are given to the nearest state beside them. Tiny gaps of land that one state completely surrounds and no state holds (a few pixels, left by the dataset's grid) are filled with the surrounding state. Borders between states on land are never moved. Corrections to the source data (checked against three sources each): Algeria: labelled Emirate of Abdelkader 1840-1841 and French Algeria 1842-1847 - the source keeps the Regency of Algiers, which fell in 1830, and calls the French part 'French Equatorial Africa'. Czechoslovakia: drawn as its own state 1945-1946, 1969-1990 and in 1992 from the source's own outlines of it - the source draws it inside the Soviet Union and splits it before its dissolution on 31 December 1992. Albania: labelled People's Republic of Albania 1946-1976 - the source uses the 'People's Socialist Republic', a name adopted only in December 1976. Ireland: labelled Ireland from 1938, its constitutional name in English - the source uses the Irish-language 'Éire'. Austria: labelled Austrian Empire in 1805 and Federal State of Austria 1934-1937 - the source says 'Habsburg Monarchy' and 'Republic of Austria'. Bavaria: labelled Electorate of Bavaria 1623-1805 - the source says 'Duchy of Bavaria' until it became a kingdom in 1806. Bulgaria: drawn as the Kingdom of Bulgaria in 1945-1946 from the source's own 1947 outline - the source draws it inside the Soviet Union. Scotland: drawn as a separate kingdom 1609-1651 and 1660-1706 from the source's own outline of it (the source merges it into England), inside the Commonwealth in 1652; England is a kingdom again from 1660 and Great Britain from 1707. Hungary: labelled Kingdom of Hungary (1920-1945) - the source says 'Hungarian Republic'. Also corrected: Serbia, Greece, United Kingdom, Denmark, Papal States, France, Indochina, Andorra, Portugal, Northern Cyprus, Northern Syria, Germany, Holland, North Macedonia, Belgium, Romania, Congress Poland, Sweden, Syria, Switzerland, Former Yugoslavia 1992-1995, Spain, Naples, Northern Italy, Ionian Islands, Poland, Hanover, Dutch East Indies, Sardinia, Saxony, Menorca, Yugoslavia. The map is drawn true to shape at the region's centre latitude.
