Asia from 3000 BC to 2024, redrawn every year.
Every year from 3000 BC to 2024, at 5.06 years per second after a compressed opening (3000 BC..2701 BC at 40.0 years per second). Every border on screen is real mapped territory, not illustration: Cliopatria's (Seshat Global History Databank, CC BY 4.0) polygon for that polity in that year, with gaps filled from OpenHistoricalMap (CC0). 775 states appear; the panel names the largest eight.
Notes:
White land inside the region is land for which the dataset maps no state in that year - not necessarily empty or unclaimed land.
Each state keeps one colour for the whole film; the region window is a framing choice.
Grey land inside the frame is another continent (from Natural Earth's continent boundaries) and is outside this film: its states are not drawn or listed.
The source polygons are coarse at the coast, so every territory is fitted to the Natural Earth coastline: fills stop at the shore, and small islands or coastal slivers that no state in the dataset holds are given to the nearest state beside them. Tiny gaps of land that one state completely surrounds and no state holds (a few pixels, left by the dataset's grid) are filled with the surrounding state. Borders between states on land are never moved.
Corrections to the source data (checked against three sources each):
Oman: labelled Omani Empire (to 1856) and Sultanate of Muscat and Oman (1857-1970), and drawn whole from 1922 from the source's own outline of Oman - the source uses the 1970 name throughout and draws Muscat and the coast inside British rows.
Afghanistan: labelled Afghanistan 1987-1995 and 2002-2005, drawn as one state from 2002 - the source calls the state 'Mujahideen' 1987-1995 and keeps the Taliban in power until 2005.
Nagorno-Karabakh: shown as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Republic of Artsakh from 2017) until 2023 and as Azerbaijan from 2024 - the source draws it, and 1996-2024 the districts around it, inside Armenia.
Iran: labelled Qajar Dynasty 1895-1897 and 1924-1925 and drawn whole 1942-1945 - the source swaps its name with the Dutch East Indies, starts the Pahlavis in 1924 and splits it among occupiers' rows.
Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain: drawn as their own states from 1972 - the source keeps them inside the United Kingdom and British Empire rows (to 2023 and 1995), although British protection ended in 1971.
Bulgaria: drawn as the Kingdom of Bulgaria in 1945-1946 from the source's own 1947 outline - the source draws it inside the Soviet Union.
Iraq: drawn as the Republic of Iraq 2006-2023 from the source's own outline of it - the source draws it as part of the United States.
Cambodia: labelled Cambodia 1432-1867 - the source keeps the name 'Khmer Empire' after Ayutthaya took Angkor in 1431, which ended that empire.
Also corrected: Armenia, Egypt, Greece, Alexander's empire, Burma, Song dynasty, Central Asia, China, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, France, French India, Indochina, Northern Cyprus, Northern Syria, Georgia, Saudi Arabia, Goa, Dutch East Indies, Republic of China, Pakistan, Tibet, South Vietnam, Thailand, South Yemen, Syria, Myanmar, United Kingdom, Holland, Bhutan, Portugal, Spain, Gwalior, Afghanistan 1978, Manchuria, Japan and South Korea, Chitral, Hunza and Nagar, Rajputana, Hainan, Afghanistan 1979-1989, Laos.
The map is drawn true to shape at the region's centre latitude.
