Courtempierre | Steinway A3 · UDO DMNO | Horror Piano & Synth Improv after Vampyr (1932)

A dark, Giallo-inspired improvisation for piano and synthesizers, inspired by Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1932 film Vampyr — "the dream of Allan Gray." My performance is entirely improvised against a track of sounds I recorded earlier in the studio with Erica Synths' Syntrx II and Waldorf's Quantum MK2, bent into something unstable and nocturnal. Over it, live: my 1932 Steinway A3 grand and the UDO DMNO. The music runs out just as the film begins. In its last moments, the performance dissolves into the opening frames of Vampyr, the point where a stranger first arrives at the edge of Courtempierre . That seam is where the piece gets its name. Dreyer called his film a dream, and I tried to play inside one.
