Sunita 30: (crying) Brother, I never thought you would try to put so many children’s lives at risk…
Rajeev 32: (with tears in his eyes) Brother, you should have thought once that those children are just as precious as your own child…
Madhav 34: (angrily) I became blinded by anger when I saw your growing success.
Radhika 22: (sadly) Brother, Bhabhi’s success was helping improve our family’s financial condition. You shouldn’t have done this.
Ramesh 57: (angrily) Madhav, I never imagined you could do something like this.
Tanvi 32: (angrily) If something had gone wrong today, I could never have forgiven you.
Narration: What exactly had Madhav done that made the entire family so angry with him? And whose success were they talking about? Let’s go back a little and find out the whole truth.
The sky was covered with dark clouds, and heavy rain had been falling since morning. The street outside the house was completely flooded.
Sunita and Tanvi’s children, Ravi and Sonu, were standing near the door and watching the rain. Suddenly, they noticed Mintu and Ritu eating hot samosas.
Ravi 6: (greedily) Mintu, you’re eating samosas? Please give me one too. I really want one. Hot samosas in this rain would be so much fun!
Sonu 8: (innocently) Yes, Mintu. Give us one each. We’re not asking for money, just one samosa. It smells so good!
Mintu 7: (arrogantly) Poor kids! These samosas aren’t for you. If you’re so hungry, ask your parents to buy them for you. Why are you staring at ours?
Ritu 6: Yes, don’t ask us for samosas. Bring money from your house first, then you can eat.
Narration: Ravi and Sonu became sad. Their eyes filled with tears as they quietly looked toward the samosa stall. Hot samosas were being fried in the large pan, making a tempting sizzling sound.
Samosa Seller 35: (firmly) Son, don’t keep staring like that. Nothing is free here. If you want a samosa, bring money.
Ravi 6: (sadly) We don’t have any money, Uncle. We were just looking.
Samosa Seller 35: I understand your situation, son, but I also have a business to run. If I give everything away for free, how will I survive?
Narration: Both children lowered their heads and went back inside.
Soon Ravi ran to his mother.
Ravi 6: (crying) Mom, I want a samosa too. Look at the rain! Please make one for me. If you can’t make it, buy one from the market.
Sunita 30: (hugging him) Son, I also want to feed you a hot samosa, but I don’t have money. Where will I get it from?
Ravi 6: But Mom, all the other children are eating them. Am I less than them?
Sunita 30: (emotionally) No, son. You are not less than anyone. We just have difficult circumstances right now. Being poor is not shameful. Not working hard is. I will work hard, and one day I will give you everything you wish for.
Meanwhile, Sonu went to his mother Tanvi.
Sonu 8: Mom, I want a samosa too. When Dad comes home, please ask him to buy one for me. Everyone outside is eating, and I’m just watching.
Tanvi 32: Don’t cry, son. I’ll ask your father. Now stay inside. It’s raining heavily and you could slip outside.
Suddenly, Subhadra’s loud voice echoed through the house.
Subhadra 55: There isn’t even enough food in this house, and the children want samosas! I haven’t eaten anything since morning. Bahu, first prepare the food for everyone.
Narration: Sunita immediately went into the kitchen. She opened every container. One had a little rice, another had some lentils, and another had only a little flour.
She realized that the food was barely enough for four people.
Sunita: (to herself) God, I can’t even fulfill my children’s small wish. But I have to feed everyone with whatever we have today.
She kneaded the flour and made rotis. She added extra water to the small amount of lentils so that everyone could have some. She also cooked the rice and prepared a simple green-chili chutney.
When the food was served, Tanvi looked disappointed.
Tanvi 32: Is this even food? Every day it’s the same roti, watery dal and rice. The children must be tired of it too.
Radhika 22: Honestly, Bhabhi, I’m tired of eating the same thing too. Sometimes I just want to go outside and eat something spicy.
Subhadra 55: My sons earn money for a reason! Are they earning just to keep it locked away? Two sons are earning,
