Trekking via the Faulhorn to the Wild and Quiet Side of Grindelwald

A 2-day hiking tour via the Faulhorn, Schyniger Platte, and Grosse Scheidegg in the Bernese Oberland This varied two-day tour takes you through the Bernese Oberland above Grindelwald. The route combines magnificent panoramic views of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau trio and idyllic mountain lakes—such as Bachalpsee, Hagelsee, and Hexensee—with an overnight stay at the historic Berghotel Faulhorn (2,681 m). Day 1: From Schynigen Platte via Berghaus Männdlenen to the Faulhorn The tour begins at Schynigen Platte (ascent via the mountain railway from Wilderswil). The route starts with an immediate climb to Tuba (2,076 m) and an optional ascent via steps to Oberberghorn. It continues with views of Lake Brienz and the north faces of the Bernese Alps. After covering roughly two-thirds of the distance and stopping for a break at Berghaus Männdlenen (2,344 m), the path leads up via moderate inclines to Berghotel Faulhorn (2,681 m). Day 2: From the Faulhorn via Bachalpsee and the Wart Pass to Grosse Scheidegg On the second day, the route first descends nearly 350 vertical meters to Bachalpsee. From there, it leaves the busy trails and climbs past Hagelsee and Hexensee up to the Wart Pass (2,700 m). After a weather-dependent detour towards Wildgärst, the descent leads down to Grosse Scheidegg over scree slopes and snowfields, offering views of the Wetterhorn. From there, a bus takes you to Grindelwald, followed by a train ride back to the starting point in Wilderswil. Requirements: Stamina for moderate inclines; sure-footedness on scree sections and snowfields. Hiking poles are recommended. Note: This is an alpine hike. Rapid weather changes, fog, and windy spells should be expected along the ridges. Sturdy hiking boots, as well as rain and sun protection, are essential. Hike undertaken: 17th/18th.
