An anomaly in its time, Brahms’s trio was written for the natural horn, which had long been replaced by the modern valve horn. The German term “Waldhorn” (or “forest horn”) referred to the traditional outdoor use of the instrument. In recapturing the character of the historical instrument, which Brahms learned in his childhood, the composer created a richly personal work with a unique legacy that endures today.
