Tonight we follow one family, and the empire they built, from a campfire on a hillside in Anatolia to the last train leaving Istanbul, six hundred years later. A calm, chronological history for sleep: Osman and the frontier, Bursa and the crossing into Europe, the Janissaries, Timur at Ankara, the fall of Constantinople in 1453 told at walking pace, Selim and Suleiman, an ordinary evening in sixteenth-century Istanbul, Lepanto and Vienna, the Tulip Era, the reforms, and the last hundred years.
I never turn on mid-roll ads. You don't need to remember anything. If you fall asleep somewhere in the fourteenth century, the empire will carry on without you.
