Join us on Vitko Travels as we head out to Bells Gap Trail in Bellwood, Pennsylvania, for a relaxing hike through the woods and a little local history! Bells Gap Trail is usually our first hike of the season because it's close to home and the perfect place to get our hiking legs back after a long winter. There's no big adventure planned—just getting outside, enjoying nature, and easing back into hiking. But there's more to this trail than meets the eye! On our way back, we take a look at the fascinating railroad history behind Bells Gap Trail. 🚂 A Little Bells Gap Trail History • The trail follows the former route of the Bells Gap Railroad, which connected Bellwood with communities and resources farther west in the mountains. • The railroad began as a narrow-gauge line and was converted to standard gauge in 1872. • Trains transported people and goods, including coal and lumber, across this mountainous region. • The railroad eventually became obsolete as road transportation improved in the 1930s. • Today, the former railroad corridor provides a scenic place for hiking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors. 🥾 About Bells Gap Trail The trail stretches approximately 6.3 miles from the Bellwood area toward Lloydsville, with a smoother crushed-limestone section near Bellwood and a rougher, unimproved section farther up the mountain. 📍 Trail Information & Resources Official Antis Township Parks and Recreation page: https://www.antistownship.org/communi...
