88% of organizations now use AI. Only 1% of leaders say their rollout is mature.
In this conversation, Candice Faktor, Co-Founder and CEO of Disco, sits down with Marc Metakis, Partner at McKinsey Academy, to unpack what it takes to close that gap: how organizations build the leadership capabilities, behaviors, and ways of working required to turn AI adoption into sustained business impact.
They walk through McKinsey’s three horizons of AI maturity: enablement, where employees get access to general-purpose AI tools; automation of existing workflows; and reinvention, where organizations redesign how work gets done and how value is created. They discuss what it takes to move between those horizons, and why technology alone isn’t enough.
They also dig into how leadership itself is changing. As AI becomes more embedded in work, leaders increasingly need to act as visionaries, architects, catalysts, coaches, and humans, pairing practical AI fluency with capabilities like systems thinking, discernment, human-agent collaboration, adaptability, and trust.
And they look ahead to the next challenge: how organizations can make learning more continuous and closer to the flow of work, combining formal learning with applied practice, reinforcement, coaching, and AI-enabled support.
