Kerala is preparing for a major change in its public transport system, with the state government deciding to bring private buses under the KSRTC network through a wet lease arrangement.Under the proposed scheme, private buses will operate as part of the KSRTC public transport network. In the first phase, around 1,000 private buses in the southern districts are expected to begin services under KSRTC. The government plans to fix rental payments on a per-kilometre basis. One of the key features of the proposed model is that private bus owners will provide the buses and drivers, while KSRTC conductors will handle ticketing and passenger services. The initiative aims to support the struggling private bus industry while strengthening public transportation in Kerala. The decision comes amid growing financial difficulties in the private bus sector. The proposed indefinite strike by private bus operators was withdrawn following discussions with Transport Minister C.P. John. The government's decision to introduce the wet lease model was a key factor behind the withdrawal. The private bus industry supports thousands of passengers and provides employment to hundreds of workers across the state. The new initiative is expected to offer relief to bus owners while ensuring continuity of services for commuters.
