Hunslet Works No. 3797 – WD 197 “Sapper” (No. 25) in Action at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
Enjoy the sights and sounds of Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 3797, better known as WD 197 “Sapper”, working on the beautiful Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in Cumbria.
Built in 1953 by the Hunslet Engine Company for the Ministry of Defence, this Austerity saddle tank locomotive spent its early working life serving at Army depots including Bicester and Longmoor. Named “Sapper” in 1965, it arrived on the Kent & East Sussex Railway in 1977, where it later carried the name “Northiam” after entering traffic in 1981 in its distinctive blue livery.
Following several overhauls and over four decades of heritage railway service, No. 3797 moved to the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in June 2025, where it continues to delight visitors on the picturesque 3.2-mile branch line between Haverthwaite and Lakeside at the southern end of Windermere.
I was lucky enough to film this hardworking locomotive during its visit, capturing its unmistakable exhaust beat and classic industrial character. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed filming it!
