IGP3 Back Transport | Teaching Harri to Stay Bound to the Handler While Watching the Helper

In this training session, Diane Griffin is working with Harri on the IGP3 back transport, with helper Tony Milazzo of Milazzo K9. One of the challenges in the back transport is creating a dog that remains physically connected to the handler while still being allowed to maintain awareness of the helper. That is exactly what we're working on here. 🎯 THE TRAINING PICTURE I’m teaching Diane to essentially “bind” Harri to her left leg. The goal is for Harri to understand that his body position belongs with Diane even though his attention may be directed toward the helper. We’re separating two important pieces: 🐕 BODY POSITION — stay connected to Diane’s left leg 👀 VISUAL FOCUS — Harri is allowed to watch the helper 🗣️ VERBAL CUE — “HELPER” tells Harri that looking at the helper is appropriate 🚶 MOVEMENT — maintain that relationship as Diane and the helper begin moving The picture we want is: STAY WITH THE HANDLER → “HELPER” → WATCH THE HELPER → MOVE TOGETHER Rather than forcing Harri to choose between heel position and watching the helper, we're teaching him that both behaviors can happen at the same time. His body stays connected to Diane while his eyes and attention are permitted to follow Tony. This distinction becomes especially important in protection work, where we want the dog highly interested in the helper without sacrificing the handler's ability to control position and movement. The verbal “helper” cue gives Harri clear permission to shift his visual attention while the positional criteria remain unchanged. As the behavior becomes stronger, Diane can begin asking for more movement, more duration, and eventually a cleaner picture that resembles the finished IGP3 back transport.
