For 160 million years, dinosaurs ruled every landscape on Earth except one. Beneath the waves, air-breathing reptiles built dynasties with body plans no therapod could evolve. Some had necks longer than their bodies. Others bit with forces exceeding 33,000 newtons. A few gave live birth 100 kilometers from shore.
Ichthyosaurs appeared 247 million years ago already shaped like dolphins, hunting squid in open water with eyes the size of dinner plates. Pliosaurs like Liopleurodon delivered 14,000-newton bites, hanging motionless before brutal acceleration. Mosasaurs radiated into 40 species within 10 million years, spreading to every ocean and swallowing prey half their body length with triple-hinged jaws.
Then the asteroid hit. Every mosasaur, every plesiosaur, every lineage that had survived earlier extinctions vanished within decades. Marine mammals rebuilt the ocean from scratch, reinventing pursuit predation, deep diving, and filter-feeding in half the time it took reptiles. The relay that began 250 million years ago ended with warm-blooded architects, and the world they made is the one we're deciding whether to keep.
