Long before Tyrannosaurus walked, Earth belonged to predators with sails taller than humans rising from their spines. Herbivores the size of rhinos, armored in bone, tusks curved like scimitars. Saber-toothed killers with 12 cm fangs that made lions look gentle. Every single one is more closely related to you than to any dinosaur. Dimetrodon stalked Permian swamps 280 million years ago, a 4.6 meter predator using its towering sail to warm blood faster than rivals. Inostrancevia, a gorgonopsian the size of a grizzly, drove twin sabers deep into 2-ton herbivores across the Karoo floodplains. Lystrosaurus, a pig-sized burrower, survived the worst extinction in history and inherited a planet where 90% of species had died. These were synapsids, the monsters that dominated land for 80 million years before dinosaurs ever evolved. They invented differentiated teeth, warm blood, parental care, and whiskers 50 million years before the Mesozoic began. The three bones amplifying sound in your skull migrated from cynodont jaws 250 million years ago. Your diaphragm evolved in Permian therapsids. Two mass extinctions reduced this empire to rat-sized survivors that spent 135 million years in the shadows, waiting. Then an asteroid fell 66 million years ago, and the synapsid lineage exploded into every mammal alive today.
