In Kokofu, Ghana, farmers are using agroforestry to protect their crops from bushfires and improve growing conditions. In this episode, host Ivy Prosper visits a farming community in Ghana’s Bono East Region, where farmers are planting firebelts, walls of trees surrounding their crops, to protect their farms from fires and strong winds while helping restore rainfall patterns. We hear how firebelts are helping farmers protect their crops, maintain their livelihoods and build resilience to changing weather conditions. Farmers also share the challenges of adopting this technique, from limited resources to the time it takes for trees to grow, and why they are committed to its long-term benefits. This episode was written and produced in Ghana by student producer Georgia Looman, with support from Farm Radio International’s Accra office and community radio station Atoobu FM in Atebubu. This episode was produced by Farm Radio International, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada.
