Haunted England | Walking an Ancient Coffin Trail to a Medieval Church

Join me as I explore one of Sussex's most intriguing ancient paths — the Coffin Trail between West Burton and Bury. For centuries, this ancient route was used to carry the dead from West Burton to St John the Evangelist Church in Bury, where they could be buried in consecrated ground. Today, the trail is a peaceful woodland walk through the Sussex countryside, but knowing its dark history gives this beautiful path a very different atmosphere. In this Haunted England special, I'll be walking the ancient Coffin Trail and discovering the history behind these old funeral routes, before arriving at the remarkable medieval church of St John the Evangelist in Bury. Inside the church, we'll discover a fascinating collection of historic features, including a 15th-century font, the ancient church tower and its old bell, a late-17th-century bier, a 17th-century pulpit, the medieval rood screen with its tiny openings, and the beautifully carved 1910 wooden reredos in the chancel. And there's one question I couldn't help wondering... Could the old bier still inside the church have once been used to carry the dead along the very Coffin Trail we've just walked? There's no surviving evidence to prove that it did — but the possibility certainly adds another layer to this fascinating piece of Sussex history.
