You can start your recovery yourself, today, on your own terms. In this episode of The Human Experience, host Deanne Adamson walks through do-it-yourself recovery — what it is, what it isn't — and shares the recovery strategy template Being True To You uses with coaching clients, so you can build your own roadmap. Most people have that one condition or habit that has caused years of interruptions and heartache. Other habits come and go, but this one owns you. The trouble with a one-size-fits-all approach is that it doesn't account for how different each person is, or for the personal journey underneath the behavior. Handing someone the answers can quietly take away their right to work things out for themselves. Do-it-yourself recovery isn't staying in your comfort zone or avoiding the work. It's the opposite — you're switching things up, choosing activities and supports that genuinely inspire you, assembling your own team, and weaving it together into a strategy that fits your life. Deanne is clear that a confidant, strategist, or coach matters here: someone outside your emotional circle who keeps you honest and holds you to the plan. But you take the reins, because you're the only one who knows what it will take and the only one who can make it happen. The recovery strategy template Four parts, each with questions to work through on paper: Vision Quest: what's motivating you to change, what all the hard work is for, and what you believe is possible. Reality check: what you're refusing to acknowledge, what this journey has cost you, and what needs attention. Safety measures: the obstacles you can foresee, the signals that you're on track or drifting, and the supports you'll need. Action guide: your commitments, your daily and weekly steps, what you're eliminating, and who holds you accountable. Each section is illustrated with an example scenario showing how a real plan takes shape. Yours might be a few commitments on a napkin or a typed weekly plan with accountability built in. Either way, start. How have you changed a habit or dropped an addiction by doing it your own way?
