I made this decorative papier-mâché tray using paper, PVA glue, wooden sticks, real leaves, and acrylic paint. 🌿
For the mold, I used a rectangular paperboard container with a plastic-coated interior. This is important: a plain cardboard container can absorb moisture, soften, and lose its shape while the papier-mâché is drying.
I covered the container with papier-mâché and let it dry for about 3–4 days. Then I removed the container and allowed the tray base to continue drying. For extra strength, I covered the surface with a layer of PVA glue and let it dry completely.
Next, I coated the wooden sticks with acrylic varnish mixed with brown paint to give them a deeper wood tone. Once dry, I wrapped them with wire and attached them to the tray using hot glue.
I added another layer of papier-mâché over the attachment points and inside the tray. While the mixture was still fresh, I pressed real leaves into the surface in a random pattern to create natural leaf imprints. Then I left everything to dry completely for another 5–6 days.
After removing the leaves, I mixed acrylic varnish with green paint and colored the entire tray. To highlight the leaf textures, I diluted acrylic paint with water and carefully painted each imprint with a thin brush.
Finally, I covered the entire tray with a layer of clear acrylic varnish.
The result is a handmade decorative tray with natural leaf textures and rustic wooden handles. 🍃
