Ronas Hill: Highest Point On Shetland · Exploring A Neolithic Tomb · Meg Retires From Hillwalking 🐶

#Shetland #Ronas Hill #chamberedcairn On this adventure, Meg and I travel to the north of the mainland and climb Ronas Hill. At 450m above sea level, it is the highest point in all of the Shetland islands. This was to be Meg's final hill walk with me. She is now happily retired and enjoying a more relaxing life 🐶 We park at the communication masts on Collafirth Hill. After leaving the parking area, the ground is initially rocky and boggy in places but after a couple of hundred metres the going becomes easier on the ascent to Roga Field, the first of the two tops before the main summit. As we gain height, the views begin to open up. After passing over Mid Field, we drop down to a small lochan which feeds the Grud Burn. The final climb is over scattered rocks and scree and we reach the large, domed summit plateau. The triangulation station sits within a wind shelter and there is a summit book for signing, should you wish to do so. We spend an hour on the summit plateau, admiring the views and I take a look inside the 2000 years old chambered burial cairn. It's a tight squeeze with very low headroom! Any remains or artifacts have long since been removed and the cairn has been altered over the years. I had considered dropping down to the Lang Ayre, a beautiful, isolated beach. However, the descent involves scrambling down and then back up some precarious ground which Meg would not have managed. So I was happy to retrace our route back to the car.
