The U.S. Army chose the M7 rifle (XM7, Next Generation Squad Weapon) in 2022 with total confidence — then stopped buying it in October 2025, and its 2027 budget asks for zero more. The shorter XM8 carbine is taking its place. In 1957 the Army adopted another rifle with the same certainty: the M14. We trace the 6.8x51 program from General Milley's 2017 Senate testimony on body armour, through the soldier testing, the Sig Sauer contract, Captain Braden Trent's teardown of 23 rifles, the DOT&E reports and the XM8 — and set it against the M14, the rifle the Army also dropped within a decade. Facts, dates and sources, and the milestones that will show whether history repeats.
