Tonight, we follow one small spacecraft from the night it left the Earth in 1972 to the quiet dark where it drifts today, and ask a simple question: where is Pioneer 10 now?
Close your eyes and let the narration carry you. There is nothing to remember and nothing to follow closely. If you drift off somewhere between the asteroid belt and the edge of the solar system, that is perfectly fine.
The short answer: Pioneer 10 is about 140 times farther from the Sun than the Earth is, roughly 21 billion km away, and it is still moving outward at about 12 km every second. Its last faint signal reached Earth in January 2003. It is heading in the general direction of Aldebaran, the orange eye of Taurus, which it would take about two million years to reach, and it still carries a small gold-anodized plaque with a message for anyone who might find it.
In this calm space documentary for sleep:
• Why scientists needed a scout to cross the asteroid belt and fly past Jupiter
• How the little spacecraft was built, powered and kept talking to home
• The Pioneer plaque by Carl Sagan, Frank Drake and Linda Salzman Sagan
• The launch in March 1972, the asteroid belt, and the first close look at Jupiter
• The mystery of the "Pioneer anomaly", and how it was finally solved
• The last signal, and where Pioneer 10 is drifting tonight
