Tonight, we drift slowly past thousands of faraway worlds, from the first planet ever found around a Sun-like star to the hidden oceans close to home, and ask a very old question: are we alone?
Close your eyes and let the narration carry you. There is nothing to remember and nothing to follow closely. If you fall asleep somewhere among the stars, that is perfectly fine.
The short answer: we do not know yet, but we now know that planets are everywhere. As of October 2026, astronomers have confirmed more than 6,000 planets around other stars, starting with 51 Pegasi b in 1995. Telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope can now read a little of the air around some of these worlds, and spacecraft are on their way to the icy moons of Jupiter, where oceans may hide beneath the ice.
In this calm science documentary for sleep:
• 51 Pegasi b, the star that wobbled, and the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics
• How the Kepler space telescope found planets by their tiny shadows
• Hot Jupiters, rogue planets and other unfamiliar worlds
• The habitable zone: not too hot, not too cold
• TRAPPIST-1, seven Earth-sized worlds around a small red star, and Proxima b next door
• How Webb reads starlight through a planet's thin ring of air
• Our own Earth, seen by a passing spacecraft as if by a stranger
• Hidden oceans on Europa and Enceladus, and the long quiet search for signals from the stars
