This video looks at all of the important aliphatic organic chemistry reactions. It starts with the isolation of hydrocarbons from crude oil by fractional distillation. It looks at the use of thermal and catalytic cracking to obtain alkenes and shorter-chain alkanes that are more in demand. It looks at both the formation and reactions of all of the following homologous series: alcohols, haloalkanes (alkyl halides), aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, alkyl hydrogensulfates, 2-hydroxynitriles, acid anhydrides, acy chlorides, esters, nitriles, amines and amides. Throughout the video, you will find links to other videos giving greater detail, both on the practical aspects and underlying theory.
