On April 13th, 1970, an oxygen tank exploded aboard Apollo 13, more than 300,000 km from Earth. The explosion took out the crew's air, electricity, and water. The Moon was still a day ahead, and there was no rescue ship and no spare. On paper, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert didn't have enough of anything to survive the 4 days home.
In this episode of Curious Journey, we tell the real story of how NASA brought them back with pencils, slide rules, cardboard, and tape, and why some of the most famous moments from the movie didn't happen the way you think.
🔍 What you'll learn in this video:
✅ Why the world had stopped watching Moon missions by 1970
✅ How the Apollo spacecraft worked: Odyssey, the service module, and Aquarius
✅ Why Ken Mattingly was pulled from the crew 3 days before launch over measles he never caught
✅ The real words: "Houston, we've had a problem," not "we have a problem"
✅ What caused the explosion, and why it really started on the ground years earlier
✅ How the lunar module, built for 2 men and 2 days, kept 3 men alive for 4
✅ The "free return" path, and how the Moon's gravity swung them back home
✅ Why Apollo 13 still holds the record for the farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth
✅ The square filter vs. round hole problem, and the adapter built from tape and cardboard
✅ Surviving near-freezing cold, rationed water, and illness on board
✅ How they aimed an engine burn using only the edge of Earth's shadow
✅ How Mattingly helped bring the dead command module back to life
✅ The re-entry blackout that lasted too long
✅ The truth behind "Failure is not an option"
✅ Grumman's joke $312,421.24 towing bill
✅ Why NASA calls Apollo 13 a "successful failure"
