Super Mario World on the NES was never supposed to happen: in 1990, Nintendo admitted the console couldn’t handle Mario riding Yoshi. In 1995, Taiwanese pirates Hummer Team made a bootleg port anyway. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:20 Super Mario World (Volume 1) · 1995 7:14 Super Mario World (Full Version) · 1998 10:39 Super Mario World (Improvement) · 2017 🎮 SUPER MARIO WORLD (VOLUME 1) · 1995 Developed by Hummer Team and published by J.Y. Company, it’s an unofficial NES port of Super Mario World from the SNES. It keeps a shrunk-down overworld map, a two-player mode, the Spin Jump, the Fire Flower, the Cape Feather (minus the power dive), a short hop of its own and, most surprisingly, a rideable Yoshi. Unfortunately, the dreadful physics keep it from feeling like Super Mario World: jumping at full speed kills Mario’s momentum, and slopes work backwards. Most of the graphics come from the original, but Super Mario’s sprites are recolors from Super Mario Bros. 3, and some assets were recycled from Kart Fighter. J.Y. Company’s logo doubles as the sun in a few stages, and a secret code shows it full-screen. Banzai Bill was swapped for three tiny Podoboos, and the soundtrack rearranges the SNES music for the NES sound chip. The bootleg stops at four worlds; the rest is on the cartridge, just half-built. Blocks can’t be broken, pipes can’t be entered, Dragon Coins are useless, some enemies and bosses are missing, and Luigi always begins in World 1. J.Y. Company shipped it unfinished, yet it’s still the best-known version. 🎮 SUPER MARIO WORLD (FULL VERSION) · 1998 The full version never got its own cartridge: it only exists on the JY-120 Super 45-in-1 multicart. Every level is complete, for seven worlds and 28 levels against the original’s 78. The map grows with Forest of Illusion, Chocolate Island and Valley of Bowser, though Larry and his castle are gone. The world select appears at the start, some pipes lead to bonus rooms or work as Pipe Cannons, and Bowser’s castle keeps only three of the original’s eight selectable rooms. Bowser turns pink and yellow by sharing Peach’s palette, and the ending borrows a tune from Sachen’s Colorful Dragon (1989). 🎮 SUPER MARIO WORLD (IMPROVEMENT) · 2017 Jabu built a hack of the full version to bring it closer to the real Super Mario World on SNES: more faithful sprites, retouched palettes, a better-centered camera and fixed physics. The world select is gone, Yoshi’s Houses give you Yoshi, Dragon Coins carry over and finally earn a life, and bugs like the 4-1 checkpoint start and the timer reset are fixed. Two-player mode gets shared progress, separate reserve items and 1-Up lives for Luigi. Still, the NES doesn’t have a definitive Super Mario World. 💾 Support the channel and join the membership: Insert Coin: retro console badges, early access and priority replies. ⚠️ DISCLOSURE / CREDITS All gameplay footage in this video was captured, synchronized, and edited exclusively by Pixaplin.
