Today I'm reacting to Rowan Atkinson discussing freedom of speech, censorship, the right to offend, and why protecting freedom of expression matters — particularly when the things being said make people uncomfortable. What I find so fascinating about Rowan Atkinson is that he's someone who has spent decades making people laugh, yet when he steps away from comedy, he's incredibly articulate, intelligent, and thoughtful. And whether you agree with every argument he makes or not, there is something genuinely valuable about listening to someone explain their position with clarity and reasoning. As an American who has spent much of my adult life living outside the United States, I'm particularly interested in how different countries approach freedom of expression and where they draw the line between offensive speech and speech that should be legally restricted. Can we protect people from harassment and threats while still allowing uncomfortable or controversial opinions? Who should decide where those boundaries are? And have we become too quick to confuse being offended with being harmed?
