Can a person do good things, go to church, help others—and still not be saved?
Jesus gives us a sobering answer.
In this Light House message, we return to Luke 18:9–14 and the parable of the Pharisee and the publican. The Pharisee was religious. He prayed, fasted and gave—but Jesus said it was the publican who went home justified before God.
We also look at Jesus' warning in Matthew 7, where people will say, “Lord, Lord,” and point to the things they did in His name, yet hear, “I never knew you.”
This isn't a message about condemning people. It's a reminder that good works cannot save us. Jesus Christ does.
And if we really believe that, it should change how we love the people around us.
We discuss:
Why being a “good person” cannot save us
The danger of trusting in religious activity
What the Pharisee and publican teach us about salvation
Why humility begins with recognizing our need for God's mercy
Why our accomplishments should never become our confidence
The difference between good works and salvation
Why loving someone means being willing to share Christ with them
Why our responsibility is to share—the Lord changes the heart
One of the simplest examples came from the thief on the cross. He had no opportunity to build a record of good works.
He came to Christ.
That's the Gospel.
Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead. Our hope isn't in how good we can become. Our hope is in Him.
📖 Primary Scripture: Luke 18:9–14
Also discussed: Matthew 7:21–23, Matthew 25, Luke 9:23–25, Romans 6:23, Hebrews 9, 1 Corinthians 15 and John 3:16–17.
