THE COVENANT OF KENINGAU
The Stone That Binds Us
In the heart of Keningau, a stone came to represent more than an agreement.
It became a witness to a changing age — a time when the people of North Borneo stood at the threshold of a new political future, carrying with them their land, customs, faith, and hopes for generations yet to come.
This song remembers the spirit surrounding the Keningau Batu Sumpah, associated with indigenous leaders including Gunsanad Kakalan and Sedomon Gunsanad, and the principles that were placed at the heart of the covenant.
It speaks of the right to preserve native customs, to hold and protect ancestral land, and to practise one's faith freely.
The stone is not presented here as a monument to conquest.
It is remembered as a witness — to promises made between people, to the responsibilities carried across generations, and to the hopes surrounding the birth of Malaysia.
From the hills of Keningau to the shadow of Kinabalu, the river continues to run, the mountain still stands, and the memory remains.
A covenant written not only in stone,
but in every heart that calls Sabah home.
This musical story is part of THE NORTH BORNEO CHRONICLES, a personal cinematic history project exploring the people, places, memories and untold stories of North Borneo (Sabah).
Remembering the Past • Honouring the Courage • Inspiring the Future
