I took this photograph at Mackay Creek on September 24, 2022. We were just tooling around Bluffton that day, enjoying the river with no real agenda. The sun was bright. The sky was impossibly blue. The clouds were soft and fluffy. And then we found ourselves surrounded by the largest pod of dolphins I had ever seen. We cut the motor and listened to them pop up and exhale out of their blowholes... For a while, there was nothing to do but watch and listen. Dolphins breaking the surface. Baby dolphins swimming aside their moms. Water sparkling in the sun. Our kids watching in wonder. A little adventure, right in our own backyard. That is one of the things I love most about having a boat. The freedom of it. The ability to leave the dock and let the day unfold however it wants to. But what I remember most about days like this is not even the dolphins. It is my husband. There is something about the river that changes him. He leaves his worries behind. He laughs more easily. Sings along to his favorite songs. Finds the joy more easily, he smiles the whole time. And I think that is why these days matter so much to me. Because in the middle of work, responsibilities, bills, schedules, and all the weight that adulthood can carry, there are places that remind us who we are when we are free. For him, that place is the river. For our family, the boat has become one of those places where everyone seems to exhale. We explore. We laugh. We watch dolphins. We chase sunshine and long days. We make memories without trying so hard to make memories. And somehow those are always the ones that stay. The ambient sound of water against the hull, children laughing, seabirds overhead.
