Its deeply rooted part of our story. I took this photograph in 2021 on a date with my husband, Chris. We had three little ones at home then — somewhere around six, five, and two — and we were very much in the trenches of raising small children. We had gone out for dinner and afterward took a walk along the bluff, grateful for a few quiet hours together. Just across the street sits The Church of the Cross, one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Bluffton — perched above the May River beneath the live oaks and palmettos. It is also where Chris and I met. So much of our life is rooted right here. We were young here. We fell in love here, worshiped Jesus together here. We were privileged to grow in mentorship, faith, love and grief on this ground. We have joyfully walked these streets and brought our babies back to this church when they were tiny and fresh. We have watched sunsets over this river in so many different seasons of dating, our one break up, our marriage and parenthood journey. Sometimes we arrive well-rested, sometimes exhausted, sometimes with little hands and hearts wrapped around ours. And the river just keeps moving - ebbing and flowing - drawn by the moon. The church keeps its rhythms too - in services and seasons - weddings and funerals - dedications and baptisms. When I look at this photograph now, one of the things that strikes me most is how much has changed. Our little town has quadrupled (if not more), in people and infrastructure. That little oak tree has grown too. Our babies have not stopped growing. Chris and I have gotten older, and so have our people. We have been together for 21 years now, and somehow the landscape feels both exactly the same and completely different. Maybe that is what good roots do. They give you something steady while everything else changes. There is something beautiful about having a geographical place that holds so many versions of your life — who you were, who you are, and who you are still becoming. For us, this part of Bluffton holds it all. I think there is real value in passing those roots to our children. What an honor to let them grow up beneath these live oaks and beside this little river, teaching them the same tides, the same church family and the same pieces of God’s creation that their parents and grandparents loved before they were ever born. For us, this place is integral part of our family story. This little corner of Bluffton will always feel like peace and home.
