Bad NEWS STRIKES Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Senzo Mchunu RESPONDS

The Madlanga Commission has just heard a recording that could turn an already explosive investigation into something far more serious. A KwaZulu-Natal Hawks officer says he was pressured to implicate one of the country's most prominent police commissioners. And the name allegedly sitting behind that pressure is Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. But this is not simply a witness making an allegation from the witness stand. The commission has now heard an actual telephone conversation recorded shortly before the officer appeared to testify. In that conversation, Lieutenant-Colonel Deenadayalan “Deena” Govender speaks to Mavuso Ntandani, a man who has been described before the commission as a close associate of Mchunu. And the exchange contains one line that immediately raises questions. Govender asks whether “the Minister” will support him.
