SUMMARY: The Adirondacks have a reputation for taking people. I went back through the actual search files to find out how much of that reputation the record supports. In July 1971, eight year old Douglas Legg walked a hundred and fifty yards toward a house he could see at Santanoni, in New York's Adirondack Park, and was never seen again. His case sits inside a much longer list: E. F. Crumley near Blue Mountain Lake, Howard Gilroy on Santanoni Peak, Jack Coloney and George LaForest in the Moose River Plains, Irene Horne in the West Canada Lakes. This video works through that list in order, then goes to what the DEC's own rangers, the coroner's rulings and a November 1950 windstorm have to say about it. Along the way: the Couchsachrage of the colonial maps, the Abenaki family whose names are still all over Indian Lake, and the ghost town of Tahawus, abandoned twice.
