Step inside the Tiger I tank and sit in all five crew positions: driver, radio operator, loader, gunner and commander, in a full 3D cutaway of the interior.
57 tonnes, 92 shells, an 88 mm gun. And one weakness under the floor that stopped Tigers in their very first weeks of combat.
0:00 Inside the Tiger I
0:35 What you just climbed into
1:35 The driver
2:33 The radio operator
3:00 The loader
4:05 The gunner
5:08 The commander
6:08 The engine
7:12 The weakness under your feet
8:24 How many were built, and Tiger 131
We go front to back, the way the crew climbed in. You'll see:
how the driver steered 57 tonnes with a steering wheel and a semi-automatic gearbox,
where the 92 rounds for the 88 mm KwK 36 were stowed,
how the turret traversed, and why it depended on the engine,
what the commander saw from the cupola,
the Maybach V12 petrol engine, and the snorkel for deep wading,
the interleaved road wheels, and how mud and ice turned them against the tank.
Figures come mainly from the Wikipedia article "Tiger I" and The Tank Museum. Where sources disagree, the video gives a range or says who claimed what. The interior shown is a 3D model with some simplified details.
This channel looks at the engineering of famous military machines and the experience of the crews inside them. The Tiger I was built by Nazi Germany. We cover the machine, not the regime that sent men to war in it.
Subscribe to step inside the next machine: the Panzer IV.
