We spent an extra day in Pontevedra while on the Camino Portuguese. One of my favorite Netflix shows was filmed here, El Jardinero (The Gardener). That wasn't the only reason why we stayed the extra night here though. We had just walked almost 16 miles from Redondela, Spain to get here, so we needed a break from walking/hiking the Camino. What to see in Pontevedra: 1. Ruinas de San Domingos Convento - founded is 1282. It's free, or you can donate as you walk into the very small ruins. 2. Peregrina Sanctuary - Santuario de la Peregrina Pontevedra The church of the Pilgrim Virgin is a scallop-shaped Roman Catholic chapel located in the city of Pontevedra, in Spain, along the route of the Portuguese Way of St. James. The shape of its floor plan is inspired by a scallop shell, the quintessential symbol of pilgrims, ending in a Christian cross. 3. Convento de San Francisco - Convent & Church of St Francis. The Gothic church of San Francis is attached to the convent on the southeast side. According to tradition, the convent was founded by Francis of Assisi, who stopped in Pontevedra when he was on the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela. 4. Church of Santa Maria - Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor is located in the Alonso de Fonseca square, right in the same place where a small Romanesque church used to stand, which was demolished in the 15th century. 5. Santa Clara Convent - According to tradition, a convent of the Knights Templar had previously been built on this site. The current convent was founded in 1271. 6.The Tirantes Bridge. The Tirantes Bridge is a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Lérez River, linking the south bank to the north bank. Enjoy the scenery of Pontevedra!
