Today, I'm taking you on a walk through two historic streets in Yuexiu District—strolling from Shishu Road to Haizhu Middle Road. These two adjacent streets capture the scholarly heritage of Ming Dynasty Guangzhou and the multicultural memory of the Tang Dynasty "Fanfang" (Foreign Quarter). One route, two layers of history—waiting for you to discover. 📚 Shishu Road—The Scholar's Legacy Shishu Road is located in Guangta Subdistrict, Yuexiu District, running south from Dade Road to Huifu West Road, about 489 meters long. Originally called Shishu Street, it was expanded into a road in 1932. Name Origin The name "Shishu" (Poetry and Books) comes from Ming Dynasty scholar Zhang Xu (1456-1515). He passed the imperial exams but resigned to care for his mother, living in seclusion at "Kan Zhu Ting" (Bamboo Viewing Pavilion), where he spent his days reading and composing poetry. Locals who often heard his scholarly recitations named the street "Shishu" in his honor. Historic Sites Song Dynasty "Xi'ao" Harbor: A port for foreign merchant ships Ming Dynasty "Cishu Lou": A library built by Grand Secretary Fang Xianfu "Miaojixiangshi" (No. 123 Haizhu Middle Road): A Qing Dynasty building housing a gold-plated wooden Guanyin statue gifted by Emperor Qianlong, now the Guangzhou Manchu Association 🌊 Haizhu Middle Road—Tang Dynasty "Fanfang" Memory Haizhu Middle Road runs from Zhongshan 6th Road in the north to Dade Road in the south, about 916 meters long. It was formed in 1932 by merging several lanes. The Secret of "Xianyang Street" Few know that Haizhu Middle Road was once called "Xianyang Street". The name sounds Chinese, but it's actually an Arabic transliteration meaning "farewell". This area was the Tang Dynasty "Fanfang" (Foreign Quarter), where Arab and Persian merchants lived. Street names still bear witness: Guangta Road: Once "Dashi Lane" ("Dashi" was the Tang name for Arabia) Manao Lane: Once "Daimao Lane," named after西域 treasures Zhuojia Lane: "Zhuojia" is Arabic for "small lane" Features Haizhu Middle Road's southern section preserves well-preserved arcade architecture. On weekends, there's a morning "Tian Guang Xu" (flea market) ending around 10 AM. The 150-year-old Dexin Restaurant is also located here.
