In the third installment of our journey through York’s forgotten tramways, we head west. We begin at the historic city boundary with the West Riding, tracing the tracks from Acomb back toward the city's heart at the Railway Station.
Along the way, we take a short detour to the magnificent Holgate Windmill - a rare survivor of York’s industrial past - before rejoining the main line into the city centre.
In this episode:
Acomb History: Once a separate village mentioned in the Domesday Book, Acomb saw massive expansion in the late 19th century, largely fueled by the arrival of the railway and the very trams we are tracing today.
The Acomb Line: This route was a vital artery for commuters. Opened as an electric route in the early 1900s, it struggled with the steep gradients of Holgate Road, eventually succumbing to the flexibility of motor buses in the 1930s.
Holgate Windmill: Built in 1757, this Grade II listed tower mill is the last of its kind in York. We explore its relationship with the developing suburb around it.
