Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood used the Labour Party Conference to emphasise what she described as greater “fairness” in the immigration system. At the same time, she signalled that controversial proposals affecting permanent residence for some foreign workers could be reconsidered, with final details still unresolved. Reports around the conference indicate that the proposed 15-year settlement period for some care workers has faced significant opposition within Labour and from trade unions, and the government has not yet made its final decision.
