The Funniest Anime Which Isn't About Comedy

Gintama is often described as one of the funniest anime ever made. But here's the strange part: Gintama isn't really a comedy anime. It's a story about samurai, aliens, friendship, loss, changing times, found family, and a group of incredibly dysfunctional people trying to get through everyday life. So why is it so ridiculously funny? In this video essay, I take a closer look at what actually makes Gintama's comedy work — from its characters and chemistry to its parody, fourth-wall breaks, tonal whiplash, and surprisingly emotional storytelling. Rather than simply listing Gintama's funniest moments, this video explores why the comedy feels so different from other anime, and why the serious parts of Gintama might actually be one of the reasons the comedy works so well. Because maybe Gintama's greatest trick was never making jokes. Maybe it was making us care about the people telling them.
