The Singer Sewing Machine King's Private Life Was Much Darker Than You Thought
The official story is simple. Isaac Merritt Singer took a sewing machine that didn't work, fixed it in eleven days, and put it into millions of American homes. He died rich in an English seaside town in 1875, surrounded by family. But the family at his grave was only one of five. In New York he kept four households running at once, two of them under invented surnames. Three of the women were named Mary. On August 7, 1860, two of those households met in the street on Fifth Avenue, and within days the richest sewing machine maker in America was under arrest. His will acknowledged twenty-two children. After his death, a woman who had lived as Mrs. Singer for a quarter of a century went to court to claim she was his widow. And one line in his final will left his eldest son just five hundred dollars.
