The Dark Story of Rockwood Hall: The Rockefeller MANSION the Family Bought Back to Destroy
On a bluff above the Hudson stood the second largest private house in America. Two hundred and four rooms of granite, built by William Rockefeller, co-founder of Standard Oil, and surpassed only by Biltmore. The official story says the family simply took it down because nobody needed it anymore.
But in the summer of 1912, a congressional messenger carrying a subpoena went up that drive again and again, and was told every time that Mr. Rockefeller was sick, away, or in Canada. In December a doctor signed a certificate saying he could not speak above a whisper. After his death in 1922 the house became a country club, went bankrupt, and was bought back by his nephew, John D. Rockefeller Jr. Within a few years the crews arrived.
The house is gone. One piece of paper is not.
