Britain's 30-year government borrowing costs have climbed above 6% — the highest level since 1998 — while 10-year gilt yields have reached levels not seen since before the Global Financial Crisis. But this isn't simply a story about government bonds. Higher borrowing costs can feed directly into mortgage rates, property affordability, government finances, business investment and ultimately the amount of money households have left to spend. In this video, I look at why UK gilt yields have risen so sharply, what it could mean for millions of homeowners refinancing their mortgages, and why the British property market could become increasingly important if borrowing costs remain elevated. We also look at the government's increasingly difficult financial choices, Andy Burnham's proposed changes to the state pension system and social care, existing changes affecting higher-value properties, and the bigger question facing Britain: Who ultimately pays? Because what starts in the bond market can quickly travel through mortgages, property prices, household wealth, consumer spending, taxation and economic growth. Everything is connected. #UKDebt #bankofengland #UKBonds #ukcrisis #interestrates #britisheconomy #gilts #inflation #economy #finance #ukpolitics #andyburnham #labourparty #reformuk #nigelfarage #britishpolitics #ukeconomy #politics #economics #uk #ukeconomy #UKJobs #ukinflation #britain #UKBondCrisis #UKDebt #poundsterling #ukfinance #unitedkingdom #birmingham #brexit #ukraine #russia
