Meanwhile, in a dilapidated hut, a poor family sits together, engaged in a serious conversation. Rupali (48, distressed): Oh God! As if our poverty wasn’t enough, the factory in the city has suddenly shut down, leaving everyone out of work. Now, Kishore will also be returning from the city, and the small amount of money he used to send home every month will stop coming. How are we supposed to celebrate Diwali this time? Ram (52, grave): What can we do, my dear? I used to manage to earn a little something through manual labor here in the village, but these days, there isn’t any work to be found—not in the fields, nor on any construction sites. "Your son was saying that once he returns to the village, he’ll find some odd job here—but who can explain to that naive boy that there’s no work to be found here in the first place?" Aarti (18, sad): "Today, when I went toward the well, I ran into my friend Ganga. She was telling me, with such pride, that the cleaning, plastering, and whitewashing at her house are set to begin tomorrow morning. But we don’t even have the money for plastering—how are we supposed to get any of this done? Our hut will remain just as dilapidated, even during the festival." (Narration: Just then, Pranjal enters.) Pranjal (22, cheerful): "Look, sister-in-law! I just picked some fresh tomato leaves from the garden patch out back. Since there were no vegetables left to cook today, I thought I’d make a delicious dish out of these leaves." Aarti (18, cheerful): "Oh, sister-in-law, you’ve always been so resourceful! You somehow manage to handle everything in this house by finding a clever solution for every difficult situation." Rupali (48, affectionately): "That’s true, Aarti. My daughter-in-law never complains about anything; she manages to keep the household running smoothly, even when we have barely anything to get by on." (Narration: Pranjal goes to the hearth in the corner of the kitchen, washes the tomato leaves in cold water, and chops them finely. She prepares a hot dish of tomato leaves—tempered with dried chilies—along with some rotis, then serves the meal on plates and brings it out to the main room.) Pranjal (22, affectionately): "Mother, Father—the food is ready! Please, sit down and enjoy it while it’s still hot." Narration: Everyone is sitting on a tattered mat, eating their meal. Ram (52, happy): Truly, daughter-in-law, even in these times of hardship and poverty, you take such good care of all of us. Rupali (48, happy): Daughter-in-law, the dish you’ve managed to whip up with such ingenuity is absolutely delicious and zesty! I never imagined that a dish made from leaves could taste this good. Ram (52, happy): Indeed! There’s no one in the entire village who can match your resourcefulness. I’ve had a hearty meal today, and I truly enjoyed every bite. Narration: Just then, a neighbor named Mamta, who happens to be passing by the path outside the hut, peeks inside. Mamta (46, surprised): My goodness! You must have cooked something very special today—a wonderful, savory aroma is drifting all the way out to the street! Rupali (48, serious): Oh, sister Mamta, what kind of ‘special’ dish could we poor folks possibly make? Our daughter-in-law has simply prepared a humble dish using tomato leaves.
