Maulana Zubair Hassan spoke about the responsibility of religious leadership in guiding society. He said that scholars and religious teachers have a special influence over the thinking of the people and must use it to promote tolerance, mutual respect and social responsibility. He explained that the teachings of Islam emphasize peace, good conduct, justice and protection of life, honour and property for all human beings. He said that peaceful coexistence is not a modern idea but is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and the example of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).
On responsible citizenship, he stressed that a good Muslim is a good citizen: one who obeys the law, fulfils his obligations toward society, respects the rights of others and avoids any action that disturbs public peace. He urged religious scholars and educators of all schools of thought to speak with one voice against extremism and sectarianism, and to continue to support initiatives such as the Paigham-e-Pakistan narrative.
