AL-UṢŪL ATH-THALĀTHAH: Knowledge, Acting Upon It & Calling Others to It | العلم، العمل به، والدعوة إليه 🎙️ Dr. Sharafuddeen Gbadebo Rāji حفظه الله ورعاه Islamic knowledge is not meant merely to be learned, memorized and stored—it is meant to transform our worship, our character and our lives, and then be conveyed to others with knowledge and wisdom. In this continuation of the explanation of Al-Uṣūl ath-Thalāthah (الأصول الثلاثة – The Three Fundamental Principles), the lecture moves from the three great matters every Muslim must know: معرفة الله — Knowing Allah سبحانه وتعالى معرفة دين الإسلام — Knowing the religion of Islam معرفة النبي محمد ﷺ — Knowing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to an important methodology for the Muslim: الْعِلْمُ، وَالْعَمَلُ بِهِ، وَالدَّعْوَةُ إِلَيْهِ Knowledge, acting upon that knowledge, and calling others to it. 1. الْعِلْمُ — KNOWLEDGE The journey begins with knowledge. A Muslim must learn about Allah, His religion and His Messenger ﷺ upon evidence and correct understanding. We cannot properly worship Allah without knowing what He has commanded and what He has prohibited. Allah سبحانه وتعالى says: فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ “So know that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin.” — Surah Muḥammad 47:19 Notice that Allah begins with: فَاعْلَمْ — “So know…” Knowledge therefore precedes speech and action. 2. الْعَمَلُ بِهِ — ACTING UPON KNOWLEDGE Knowledge brings responsibility. After learning about Tawḥīd, Ṣalāh, obedience to Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ, what Allah has made obligatory and what He has prohibited, the believer strives to put that knowledge into practice. Knowledge should be visible in our ʿibādah, behaviour, dealings, family life and obedience to Allah سبحانه وتعالى. Learning without acting upon what we know defeats one of the central purposes of seeking beneficial Islamic knowledge. 3. الدَّعْوَةُ إِلَيْهِ — CALLING OTHERS TO IT After learning the truth and striving to practise it, the Muslim should also desire goodness for others and call them towards Allah according to knowledge and ability. Allah سبحانه وتعالى says: قُلْ هَٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِى “Say: This is my way; I call to Allah upon clear knowledge—I and whoever follows me.” — Surah Yūsuf 12:108 Daʿwah is therefore not merely speaking about Islam. It should be based upon بَصِيرَة (clear knowledge and insight). The believer learns, acts upon what he learns, and then helps others discover and practise the same truth—with sincerity, wisdom and correct knowledge. This lecture explores: • معرفة الله — Knowing Allah سبحانه وتعالى • معرفة دين الإسلام — Knowing the religion of Islam • معرفة النبي ﷺ — Knowing the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ • العلم — The importance of seeking beneficial knowledge • Why knowledge must come before speech and action • العمل به — Putting Islamic knowledge into practice • The danger of possessing knowledge without acting upon it • الدعوة إليه — Calling others to what we have learned • The importance of knowledge and wisdom in Daʿwah • How Tawḥīd forms the foundation of Islamic knowledge and Daʿwah • Following the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah upon understanding The lesson reminds us of an essential progression: العِلْمُ ← العَمَلُ بِهِ ← الدَّعْوَةُ إِلَيْهِ KNOWLEDGE → ACTION → CALLING OTHERS TO IT And the discussion naturally prepares the student for the next principle mentioned by the author: الصَّبْرُ عَلَى الْأَذَى فِيهِ Patience upon the difficulties encountered in this path. May Allah سبحانه وتعالى grant us beneficial knowledge (العلم النافع), enable us to act sincerely upon what we learn, grant us wisdom when calling others to His religion, and make us steadfast upon Tawḥīd and the Sunnah until we meet Him.
