THE IMPORTANCE OF AL-ADILLAH (EVIDENCE) IN ISLAM | SOURCES & LEVELS OF EVIDENCE IN SHARI'AH In matters of religion, a Muslim should not simply accept every statement, opinion, or practice without seeking Al-Adillah (الأدلة) — the evidence upon which it is based. Islam is a religion founded upon revelation, knowledge, and sound evidence. This lecture explains the importance of evidence in Islamic religious matters and why Muslims should return to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah when seeking to understand the rulings of Islam. It also discusses the levels and sources of evidence (Al-Adillah) used in Islamic jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh). Among the important sources and forms of evidence discussed are: • Al-Qur’an (القرآن) — the Book of Allah and the primary source of Islamic guidance. • As-Sunnah (السنة) — the authentic teachings, statements, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. • Al-Ijma‘ (الإجماع) — scholarly consensus on an Islamic ruling. • Al-Qiyas (القياس) — valid analogical reasoning based upon established principles and rulings. The lecture also highlights the importance of distinguishing between strong evidence and unsupported claims, and the danger of attributing something to Islam without proper knowledge. Allah says: «“Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.” — Qur’an 16:43» The Prophet ﷺ also warned against speaking about Allah and His religion without knowledge.
