A Performance To Remember II: 71000 Duke of Gloucester Aces the West Country Banks! - 2026

A short trip across Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, for another terrific performance over the West Country gradients. This day has been in the diary for a long time. Following on from the Great Britain XVIII returning to Cornwall back in April, hauled by West Country Class Steam Locomotive 34028 Eddystone, September would bring another multi-day rail tour to Cornwall, this time hauled by BR Standard Class 8, 71000 Duke of Gloucester, also a recent returner to the mainline following a major overhaul. Expectations were high; the Duke and the crew smashed it! The tour left London Paddington diesel hauled to Taunton, where the BR Standard would take over. Day one of the ‘Cornish Riviera’ ran without fault or problems attacking the West Country Banks. Upon arrival into Penzance, the locomotive and stock were pulled back into the depot at Long Rock. Days two and three are free days for passengers, to visit St Ives, St Michael’s Mount, and other nearby landmarks. 71000 will return on day four, which will include the climb over Hemerdon Bank.
